Week Five

This week we will continue talking about Paulo Freire, Hackschooling, and Sir Ken Robinson. Nothing much has changed here. There are no extra readings but there is a new Ted Talk from Sir Ken Robinson.

This week we will do an in-depth discussion of Paulo Freire’s “Banking Concept of Education” and the idea of oppressors and the oppressed. We will also counter-view the traditional method of education with the following TEDx Talk from the 13 year old hack schooler, Morgan Laplante,

Pedagogy of the Oppressed, an overview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEtjl3TqwB4

Prezi on the summary of all of Ken Robinson’s  Ted Talks

This week we will conclude our work with Sigmund Freud and move on to talk about his one-time student and protege. Carl Jung is very important to me because he is the primary psychologist that I have dedicated my life to studying. Please begin preparing to learn about Jung by reading the blue handout I gave everyone about him and his theory. It is short and simple. Read it, look up new terms, and make notes in your notebooks.I have also given you a comic that outlines the essential points of Carl Jung’s life, thoughts and work. All of the Prezi’s below are helpful in understanding Jung, but we will mainly focus on the first one. If you find it interesting, then look at the other ones on your own time 😉

1. Below you will find an excellent prezi on the man and his thought.

2. We will also use this prezi to illustrate differences between Freud and Jung.

3. And we will use this one only for it’s beautiful quote

Here is a book that might be useful to you if you find Jung interesting and want to know more.

The test

For this week please read Edmund Gettier’s Is Justified Knowledge True Belief? on pages 25-28. Also, look up “The Gettier problem” on your own in Japanese. Here is an entry on Gettier from Wikipedia http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B2%E3%83%86%E3%82%A3%E3%82%A2%E5%95%8F%E9%A1%8C

Here is a youtube link that describes the problem posed by Gettier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEvDQc0GciQ

Here is a pdf of the text so you can read it on your phone http://philosophyfaculty.ucsd.edu/faculty/rarneson/courses/gettierphilreading.pdf

A very detailed lecture on the topic for those who are interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AaY5WjiKtQ
