I have decided that I will no longer judge the ability or understanding of students. Judging a person’s ability may make them feel inferior or superior to others. And it is affiliated with traditional education styles. Being that we want to follow Paulo Freire in the creation of a pedagogical education, assignments will be “graded” with either pass or needs more work.
Midterm and final course grades will be determined as follows
- D: You will get a ‘D’ if you rarely show up for class. If you use class time to message your friends, play games on your phone, or otherwise waste time on your smartphone. Or if you just come to class to sleep or put on make up. A ‘D’ students does not fully participate in classes and does not turn in class assignments. This sort of individual fails to be a successful “student-teacher” by helping and encouraging the class.
- C: A ‘C’ comes from missing classes without talking to me about it and letting me know why you are absent. ‘C’s also come from not making an effort to use English in class participation sessions. Further, such an individual will most likely not turn in independent assignments, and will only do group work.
- B: A good student-teacher who comes to class often and lets me know when or why they will be absent may receive a ‘B’ grade. This sort of individual will also complete all in-class assignments, and do regular pre-search outside of classes in order to participate in class conversations and be an effective student-teacher. A ‘B’ level participant will also get a “Pass” grade on most in class activities. B student-teachers will complete the majority of class assignments.
- A: An ‘A’ student will do all of the same things as a ‘B’ level participant, however he or she will ALSO do “OPTIONAL AT HOME RESEARCH” projects that I put on the board at the end of each week’s class. For example, extra text book questions on the story Araby, a one page written summary of your understanding of Freud’s theories, or evidence of a clear journal that has been kept every day of the week.
